JUNIPER is a heart-warming comedy-drama about a self-destructive teenager (Sam) who is forced to take care of his feisty alcoholic grandmother (Ruth). Charlotte Rampling, an actor I have never really been impressed with, perfectly suits her role this time as Ruth. She's hilarious, foul-mouthed, and very lovable. George Ferrier is also excellent as Sam, Ruth's grandson, who slowly starts to change for the better as he spends more time with her. The relationship between Sam and Ruth is the heart of the movie, and it's wonderfully portrayed as it grows from one of resentment to one of love and respect.
The movie is directed by Matthew J Saville, who also wrote the screenplay. This is his first feature film, and he does an excellent job. The movie is well-paced and never feels slow or dull. The dialogue is sharp and often very funny. I also enjoyed the soundtrack, which fits the movie perfectly. The cinematography is excellent, and the movie is very well-edited.
Overall, I enjoyed Juniper immensely. Although at times there are moments of darkness, the movie is a feel-good story about family, love, and redemption. I would highly recommend it.
